The project is part of a program developed by the Egyptian Government, to improve the sewerage system of Alexandria, including wastewater collection, treatment and disposal infrastructures. According to the phased master plan prepared by Dr. Ahmed Abdel Warith in association with Metcalf & Eddy International and CH2M Hill, Phase I started during the early eighties, then because of population growth & the increasing demand; CAPW issued a project for upgrading and expansion of the Eastern & Western WWTPs to increase their efficiency by increasing the primary treatment capacity and adding secondary and sludge treatment units as follows:
Eastern Plant: from 607 000 m3/day to 800 000 m3/day
Western Plant: from 482 000 m3/day to 680 000 m3/day
Adding Secondary Treatment facilities to existing and future capacities for both plants
Establishing a separate Sludge Dewatering System for Eastern Plant
Both plants were issued for construction. The Eastern WWTP has been awarded to Suez & Arab Contractors & the Western WWTP was postponed by CAPW.
The project’s construction contract general condition is FIDIC 99.

Design Services for the Construction of the Proposed Facility:
Preparing detailed plans and designs for the upgrading works, including plans for increasing the primary treatment capacity and adding secondary treatment for both plants
Adding sludge dewatering unit for the Eastern plant
Preparing the tender documents of the EPC tender for both plants
Procurement Support Services:
Conducting pre-construction procurement support activities by monitoring the Contractor’s pre-qualification process, review of tender documents, and bid evaluation results
Supervision of implementation for the Eastern WWTP
Review & approval of all pre-construction deliverables and submittals
Supervising operation & maintenance activities for the Eastern WWTP
