Drawing Water From Al Assad Lake at the Euphrates River to the City of Damascus, Syria

Damascus City and Country side are currently facing a major water supply shortage. Water resources available in Damascus area and its countryside at present are confined to Barada and Al A’waj Basins with an estimated yield of 303 Mm3/yr, which can hardly meet the current demand of Damascus. With the expected rapid increase in population and water demand, the area is inurgent need for additional water supply sources from outside Damascus. The proposed water source for this project is Al Assad Lake on Al Furat River. The scope of work includes water collection, purification and transmission to Al Qaryatein Area, near Damascus. The flow rate for this project will reach 22.8m3/sec in 2040, Transmission pipelines will be 4 steel pipelines with 2200mm diam., class 24 bars, and 200km length. The system includes 4booster stations with 240 m. head each, in addition to purification and water collection.

The Scope of work include two main phases:
1.Project Alternatives & Preliminary Design, comprising: data collection, review and assessment of available data, assessment of the existing pumpstation at Al- Baberi, study of alternatives for the project components, including the intake; the first pump station and pipeline to the purification plant; the purification plant; and the transmission lines to the Combination Basin.
Design during this phase covers initial calculations, study of locations, general parameters and specifications, study of initial power requirements, identification of site investigation, economical comparisons of route alternatives and assessment of ecological effects. Based on the techno-economic report, the most suitable alternative will be selected.
2.Detailed Design and Tender documents for project components, in addition to detailed design for local control system. This phase also includes Hydraulic design for the Transmission pipeline, water hammer analyses, and design of cathodic protection.
