The project of Al Madinah Al Munawarah wastewater treatment plant is a major project due to the religious importance of the holy city.
The treatment plant is of capacity 200,000 m3/day and fulfils the requirements of the holy city till the year 2020. The plant comprises coarse and fine mechanical screens, aerated grit removal chambers and primary sedimentation tanks as primary units.
The treatment technology utilized in this plant is based on conventional activated sludge process. The secondary treatment consists of aeration tanks including surface aerators units for providing air requirements. After that process, the disinfection process starts as the treated effluent is chlorinated before final disposal to two main gravity pipelines, each with a diameter of 1000 mm and 2 km length.
